Peter Harknett, now in his late eighties, is possibly Britain's oldest working steeplejack.

Born in London in the early 1930s, Peter has been working as a steeplejack for well over half a century. This work has taken him all over the country as well as overseas. His red ladders have been seen on the towers and spires of churches and cathedrals across England and Wales.

In Peter's book A Steeplejack's View of Life, illustrated with his own pen and ink drawings and a 40-page photo section, he tells stories about some of the jobs, challenges and people he has encountered over the years.

He also talks about the past, present and future of steeplejacking. His main focus is on his specialist area, church repair and conservation, but industrial work also features.

A Steeplejack's View of Life should be in stock at One Tree Books in Petersfield. It is also available at Rogate Village Stores and the Cathedral Shop at Guildford.

The book can also be bought online. To buy a copy of A Steeplejack's View of Life on eBay for the cover price of £16, with free postage and packing in the UK, please click HERE.
